Well in the city you have a choice of 600 pubs/clubs/bars/restuarants so it depends what you're into. It depends on your budget and music tastes etc.

haha you beet me to it too! I have been put off 5th Ave lately I was there last night and at weekends it just seems to be full of drunks, 42nd street is more relaxed but the venue isn't as converatable. I am going to a club called south in a few weeks time, thats supposed to be quite good.

So if you're into indie I would say:
5th Ave
42nd Street
The Brickhouse

House
The Musicbox - Mr Scruff
The Hacienda (oh damn it closed in 1997:mad: )

Pop
The Ritz
Picaddilly 21's
Jumpin Jacks

Rock
Rockworld

R n B
M2's

I don't really know many other venues other than live gig places.
There's not jst M2 for R n B, also Lucid, Babushka, most of the Locks...although obviously not student nights at the moment so unsure of the prices - you'll undoubtedly have fun whereva u go! maybe just wnder around n see where the night takes u, it's always a safe bet to stay around printworks for convenience sakes

Dont forget the Star and Garter! Theres the Night and Day, Big Hands and the Retro Bar too. Oh and Suicide at the end of each month.

Probably one of the best cities in Europe for Indie after London and Glasgow!

There is no dress code as such, just don't where tracksuits, but trainers and t-shirts are fine.

If you have an NUS card and you're over 18 you will probably get in. If you don't have an NUS card and you look like you won't cause trouble and have a driving licence or other ID you will be let in.

They do like to see NUS cards though. Its not the easiest club to get into but its by no means the hardest. Basicaly if you can prove you're over 18 and you're student you will be let in.

Its best to go before 11:00 because its easier to get in and is cheaper.

You will need ID to get in 5th ave, but you don't need to be a student to get in. (obviously if your over 25 then you'll have problems). There is no dress code, as long as you don't look like your going to cause trouble you'll be ok. Get a flyer from the Garrat pub next door and you'll get about £2 off entry if you don't have NUS.

Many a good times I've had in 5th  Pity they plasy virtually the SAME setlist EVERY night, but drinks are cheap.

I don't need ID to get into 5th ave neither does my mate. I just show my NUS card in and they let my mate in without ID. You only need ID if you look young, if you're in your 20's you will get in no problem. You can get in if you're over 25 as well no problems. I have seen 40+ people in there.

I personaly think its gone down hill a bit though, its not what it was, maybe it will pick up again in September. After going 20+ times though the same music just gets a bit much.

I've only been going there for the last year or so, but my friends refuse to go anywhere else so its getting old now  I'd definately recommend it to anyone who likes rock and indie though.

It is the same people/music every night, very cheap drinks though

I just find it a bit commerical which is why I prefer 42nd street. I am hoping to check out the Brickhouse soon which is another good indie club. If you can afford it the Mr Boon's Disco Rescue is quiie good at south, although Hooky (New Order) was DJ'ing when I went.

Its cheap for a club but its not cheap compared to wetherspoons etc. I always go in before 11:00 to ge tthe discount.

Hey everyone, I'm planning to go on a night out in manchester with other manchester bound people from my school. Any one got any advice on decent places to go? Wanna get a feel of the night life there  Feel free to join us!!!

If you like indie music 5th Ave and 42nd Street are great...I'd definately recommend them. Best nights are monday/wednesday at 5th Ave - 50p/70p drinks, and Tuesday/Thursday at 42nd street - bottles £1, double vodka red bull £1.50. You also get Student Discount at both.
Also the Ritz plays decent music on some nights, but it's a bit scummy...

Rockworld and Satan's Hollow are more "goth" but good for a laugh, the Ritz can be goth at times too. I think Rockworld do student discount too, but I'm not sure. SH used to do all you drink on a Tuesday for £7, but they've stopped that now.

It may be worth mentioning here that the Ritz plays different music on different nights. I know it's good on a monday when it plays alternative stuff, but it plays more chart music at the weekend I think. Again drinks are cheap here. £1.30 for a bottle.

For live bands check out Band on the Wall, The Music Box, The Roadhouse/Redhouse (I forget what it's called now). Mostly unsigned bands play here. The Academy, or The Apollo is the place to go for your indie bands, and the MEN arena is where big name bands play.

If you like arty places, the Corner House has a nice bar, and shows foreign films, and The Green Room is a great bar, with poetry readings and stuff.

Po Na Na is also a great club, it's got a really good atmosphere. I would definately check that one out.

If you want bars check out Scu Bar on Oxford Road...it does great fish bowls, and Kro Bar also on Oxford Road is very classy, but it's a bit expensive. Revolution and a couple of the other bars on Oxford Road are also a lot cheaper than in other parts on Manchester. Don't forget to check out the unions too, they are only open in term time, but drinks are cheap and they have a great atmosphere. You will need Student ID to get in. (NUS accossiate card will do). Again, you get bands playing there, MUSU is a really good venue, it's quite intimate, and you can get really close to the bands!

If you're not into the alternative scene try the Printworks, there is a cinema and restaurants there, and there are some nice bars there...Norwegian Blue, Henry J Beans, that do good cocktails and stuff, but be prepared to part with your money. Tiger Tiger is the big club there, and I am led to believe some new fangled underground club has opened now too, be prepared to pay at least £5 to get in a club there, plus they are very strict on ID. Tiger Tiger was over 25's last time I checked!

There's also Deansgate. Bar Med, Moon Under Water [Wetherspoons] (that one is best avoided in my opinion), The Living Room (where Manchester United players go - often guest list only). These are resteraunts by day, bars by night, and play chart music, but again the drinks are dear.

If you like dance music head for Deansgate Locks, it can be crowded, but they often do drinks promotions...Baa Baa do really nice shots for £1, and you can get a shooter and a bottle for £1.50, they also have crazy unisex toilets. Also check out Loaf, and the ones next door to Baa Baa, can't remember their names, but they are quite good too...

The Gay Village also plays dance music, and has quite a good atmosphere, again the drinks are a bit dear, but not as bad as Deansgate/Printworks. Check out Baa Baa, Praha V, Via Fossa. However, some clubs like Spirit have now introduced a "gay only" policy. Grrrr

Finally, if you like cheese, head to Piccadilly. There's a cheap Wetherspoons that serves Snakebite and Black...oh yes! at the top of Market Street on the way to the station. Wave Bar do good bottle and (very nice) shooter offers, I think it's £1.50 or £2.50, and Jumpin' Jacks is fantastic if you like cheese! It's quite expensive to get in - around £4.50-£5.00 but cheaper if you get there early, but once you're in there the drinks are cheap. They do something called a "devil's bucket" which is a bucket of some manner of alcohol. The music is so cheesy it's untrue. I remember once doing a conga line across the stage to the lion king...!

Hope this helps, overall, I would recommend if I had to head to Oxford Road and then 5th Ave if you like somewhere bigger, or 42nd Street if you want somewhere more intimate. you're all going to have a great time in Manchester, I love it, it's a great city!

Don't forget the Brickhouse too, another great indie club just passed the Ritz on Whiteworth Street. In fact its the oldest surving indie club in Manchester (1991).
