Article: The six kitchen gadgets that have no place at uni... or anywhere else

Here they are.

Any other gratuitously dangerous kitchen gadgets? :yum:

By the way, here's what happens when pans of oil catch on fire:

Can't you avoid chip pan fires by just paying attention to the chip pan?

Fixed

Am able to declare the kitchen a danger free zone. Quite a relief.

No. No chip pans.

I think they're likely to catch fire regardless and then people panic once they're alight.

Not as worried as when my parents had one of these:

Pardon?
My mother has a chip pan but it's not actually been used for about 10 years. I keep telling her to just get rid of it but she won't.

I was watching the Feuerzangenbowle video and expecting it to all go horribly wrong. Was disappointed.

Have you read how it works and how it can be used? It's essentially a hypodermic syringe/air pump with a very sharp point. My understanding was that they were banned because you could inject air bubbles into people's veins, quite apart from any other possible danger you might be able to think of with a 3 inch long needle and the possibility of making bottles explode from compressed air. We lived in dangerous times back then.

I'm sure they crop up as murder weapons in a couple of detective stories. You can still get them on ebay.... It's a shame, because they really worked rather well and made a very satisfying popping sound when the cork came out.

They claimed it was a whisk but there was no fooling me

No but a man of half my competence most certaintly would have been. Thankfully due to my diligence it was just a passing fad

Well, that is a relief. I'm glad.

Someone who really, really likes home-made crème brûlée.
Chip pans are a waste of money. You can make your own.
