The Student Room Group

Frances Court v Pooley House

Hiya was just wondering if anyone could tell me about these two accomodations and if one is better than the other, what are the pro's and con's of each, etc? Also on the website it does not state if Frances court is for undergrads, postgrads, mature students...? Was wondering if anyone new? Any comments would be great! xxx

Depends on what you're after really. Pooley House is full of students-it's noisy etc where as Frances House-the rooms and ensuite are bigger-you get a bath! However there is more post grads, mature students etc and in general rich people because the rent is the highest on campus.
Pooley according to many is one of the most rowdy halls.

are you MAD?!!

I dont really understand why you're asking because you dont actually get to choose where you live, unless its been changed since last year.

But basically- Pooley.

Hope your residents dont find it amusing to set off the fire alarms and extinguishers all the time though. And that they're actually nice... If i'd have been placed in some flats this year, I would not have stayed. (note: I'm talking about the medic/dentist part of Pooley)

No - but you can insinuate with the pricing structure on the page with Pooley obviously cheaper then Sir France.

Sir France for the quiet and more deluxe student lifestyle and Pooley for the rowdiness and social life with other 1st years.

There *is* something about Pooley - but I'm biased having lived there 3 years in a row. To be honest, you're going to meet people wherever you live (student village especially). There are some people active on this forum that'll argue Ifor Evans Place is where the social people are...

hmm.. i know people that put France house first choice and Pooley second, and they got put in Pooley...

I'm really confused with the way you apply online, you apply in price banding, does that mean it's just luck of the draw? I put mile end campus en suit for my first choice, the only option that involved Pooley, does this mean I might get any ensuit on mile end even though I'm keen to live in Pooley? xx

If you put down en-suite, you will get Westfield Way and not Ifor Evans, Albert Stein or Lindop (mainly for medics IIRC).

If you place a tick in the highest price bracket, your chances increase of getting into Sir France, but this is never guaranteed. They gave me Maurice Court instead of Sir France even with the highest price bracket ticked. Maurice Court is still within the Westfield development.

The chances of a 1st year getting Pooley are quite high, although Richard Feilden house is brand new and houses 1st years now. So could be either. I actually prefer Richard Feilden as its literally adjacent to teaching buildings with the eatery and launderette below it. Can't get lazier if you're a student.

Anyway - I prefer Postgrad's accommodation.

Oh - whether Ifor Evans has a great social ambience, does not excuse the fact it deserves its place amongst the Maths block
