Cambridge or Oxford for English?

My first year:
Term 1 - 9 weeks
Term 2 - 9 weeks
Term 3 - 10 weeks

You see, there are 8 weeks but we also have "week nought" and "week nine". A con, a con I tell you.

hmm, that is such a con!!! If I was a prospective Lawyer I'd think about pouring over their small print

No, for me. I'm afraid St. John's will use all of the first year accommodation for conferences. When I stayed there for the interview I got this cute little set of shampoos and similar, with the college crest on them. Something tells me that those are not produced simply for the comfort and convenience of the candidates, so I think they're going for conference-cash in a big way!

I stayed over at churchill when I went to look around cambridge, not only did I get soap, and shampoo in pwetty little bottles but I got a free plastic cup too. Yes! A free plastic cup.

We've finally uncovered the reason for the ratio of applicants to places at Oxbridge colleges.

As an aside, I was trying to think of people who use this forum doing English. I can't think of anyone apart from F. Poste. Which is weird, considering that English is a huge subject and, as Baz keeps telling us, they have loads of time on their hands. Medics, on the other hand, who should be worked to the bone, seem to find plenty of time to spend here.

I'd go for the grey faerie response to this.. computer essential for medics:

- word processing our tute essays (considerably longer & more frequent than any english/history person i know)

- checking emails - our tutors have real word clinical/lab commitments so often plans have to be changed

- checking departmental/timetabling issues for our multiple seminars/labs/away tutes etc.

- using CAL tutorials..

hence when we have study breaks it migh be spent procrastinating on the computer, rather than sitting in the corridor, book in one hand, bottle in the other (or maybe that's just the ones i have to climb over.. )

hmm..did i manage to justify that..? lol

Tsk, I knew that months ago
This thread has certainly taken a very random twist  !!

Unfortunately I'm ½ an hour by train from Cam, so no complimentary shower caps for me :frown:

Here terms are 8 and a half weeks, except the last term where in the first year you have exam in 9th week. I get here on the Thrusday of 0th week for Collections.
Yeah, I'm surprised to hear that Cambridge is actually 9/9/10! My first year was 8.5/8.5/9, my second 8.5/8.5/8.5 and my third will be 8.5/8.5/6.5.
My academic terms have been 8.5/8.5/9, 8.5/8.5/8.5 and 8.5/8.5/7. But my actual term (time spent in/with Oxford) has been 15/12/9.5, 15/10/9.5 and 14/8.5/9.5.

15 due to OUBC training? Friend of mine has about 4 weeks off this summer, rowing at the JWC till end of July, then OUBC from Sept. 1st. Crazy rowers.

Yeah. Training starts on the 1st September, term starts about 6 week later in the middle of October. And for junior internationals coming it's a very short summer term, I had 30 days holiday before I came here - and that included results day and the having to do the summer fitness program.

Wow, you were an international.
(You better have no mates or I'm going to officially classify you as one of those irritating people who's just too damn talented for everyone else to bare).

Unfortunately my talents start at Economics and end at rowing, outside those two disciplines I'm fairly average at best.

And most of the serious trialists have either rowed at their school for 5 years or got an international vest; it was a bit of a shock when I first came here and realised I wasn't really anything special.

I first realised this when I heard that my mate, who is comfortably top of GB on his side, had accepted that his chances of Blue Boat selection next year were pretty slim. Another friend of mine, who is 5' 7" and weighs 65 kg's on a good day, intends on trialling for OULBC. Should be interesting to see how he gets on.

It's quite possible for a superb junior oarsman to not get a seat in the university boats; and few go straight from school into the Blue Boat, I think Matt Smith did it, but it's very uncommon. 5'7" is a bit too small for the lightweights, unless he has a big set of lungs or an amazing erg he probable won't get too far.
