Are you sure you've written your question correctly?

Is it written like +- or more like \pm in the actual question? Or have you made a typo?

Its written like the second one, I just cant write it like that using my keyboard. Could you help me?

I'm (guessing) that the intent is along the lines of:

y = 123456 +/- 89

So smallest possible value of y is 123545
And largest possible value of y is 123367

Therefore the appropriate number of digits is 3 (y = 123000).

<Rant> I have to say that I've always disliked the whole sig fig thing in these circumstances since you are throwing away almost an entire digit of accuracy just to be "correct". I'd rather the original form (including error range). </Rant>
