Hi I am new to TSR so I don't know if I am posting on the right part of the forum.
Anyway I hope to be going to either Manchester Or Birmingham University after my A levels. I am currently doing AS levels and was wandering whether work experience was crucial to get a place at those universities.

Also if it is crucial, does anyone know of any ICT/Computing businesses around Farnborough or Bracknell. I did try to find some in Bracknell but there doesn't seem to a single company in Bracknell operating in the IT and computing sector offering work experience.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Afraid I'm not from around that area.

I'm in the same situation as you (wanting to go the same Unis actually!) and I asked around the family to see if anyone knew of any potential placements. Lucky for me, my dad works as an engineer at a local university and has been able to get me a placement with the IT management there So, my advice would be to ask around family and friends to see if anyone is employed in IT or closely associated with it to see if they know anybody: maybe you'll get lucky.

It may also be worth finding companies that aren't actually in the IT sector but are big enough to have an IT department, technician etc. who may be kind enough to give you some experience.

Thanks for the reply, I,ll ask around, but Bracknell is pretty decrepit in terms of Large companies.

Good luck mate, can be very frustrating I know (since you're pretty much offering to work for free).

Try a bit of freelancing. Setup your own project online (web/app development? APIs?), contribute to existing open-source projects etc. get a GitHub profile, produce sample code. Or... server administration and networks, perhaps a Cisco course?

Plenty of ways you can approach this.

QinetiQ in Farnborough may be able to offer you something if you eventually need it.
