Or PPE at Balliol?

I'm not sure if annual application:tongue:laces ratios are useful, but candidates do need some information on those kinds of things otherwise they can't make an informed choice. I like the colour thing though - easier to understand, and doesn't highlight the trivial differences. With numbers, it would be easier to get hung up over one college having 4.2 applicants per place and another having 4.4; with colour banding they'd be the same which is basically true.

Plus it covers the discrepancies between subjects - something like Medicine/Law/PPE will have much higher ratios than Theology or Oriental Studies (or Oxford equivalent) and so it gets rid of these.

PPE actualy dosen't have that high an application ratio, I think it's about 27% or something.

Well, I wouldn't encourage student to refer to application ratios, I certain didn't. Have belief in the system, if you're good enough you'll get there though the pool.

Ooh, Corpus sounds perfect . Thank you.

Er...really? Well, it looks good actually: CCC has lots of tutors for both subjects, and 2 philosophy professors. Ratio of apps:tongue:laces - 2.3. Not bad at all. More here, the CCC Propsectus. Might also want to check out Alternative Prospectus, which is very recent (only uploaded a couple of weeks ago).

Baz: Not for the first time, I'll say that as a PPE scholar at Balliol educated at Westminster, you are not a tpyical candidate/student. It is a fact that certain candidates will get in if they apply to certain colleges, and will not if they apply to certain others. Hence it matters a lot to some people.

Well why'd you suggest it if it wasn't perfect?

Don't blame me - Mussed did it first, I was just following that lead. Glad you seem genuinely interested though. It is a really nice college, I'm pleased with my choice and can't wait to get there; however, it's not up there with the Balliols of this world in terms of popularity.

I was considering Balliol but I got the impression that a lot was expected of its students. Am I right?

Probably. Baz is the man to ask that, though. The nice thing about Corpus is that because it's small, you'll get extremely personal attention; tutors really will be sympathetic to your needs. I was talking to a student during interviews, he was telling me had occasionally had 1 on 2 tutorials (i.e one student, two tutors). Which is nice

Along with Meron and St Jonh's it's one of the most academic college; every student who is given a place is considered to have the potential to obtain a First class degree and will be expected to obtain at least a 2i. If you want at easy ride; doing some work here, some work there; Balliol probable wouldn't be the place for you. But the teaching is outstanding.

Someone tell me about Magdalen please . From what I can tell it seems like a really great college, but again I might be aiming too high (not with regards to what I'm capable of but what I'm willing to do). Considering Corpus seems to appeal to me, would Magdalen also be suitable, or is it much more academic?

I thought magdalen was not very academic, from the tompkin tables. But I don't know how accurate the tompkin tables are...

The Tompkins tables are for Cambridge. Magdalen is a bit low on them because Magadlen College, Cambridge, isn't the most academic college over there.

If you look at the Norrington Tables, for Oxford, I think you'll see Madgadlen's been top 5 for the last few years, maybe even top 3.
And the Norrington Tables isn't a reliable show of long term academic capabilty either...

Magdalen is one of the more academic college, but I don't really think it stands out as being incredible so.

I'd agree with "Geogger's" suggestion of Jesus...but then again i'm biased! I applied there this year for E+M and have a conditional offer - it does seem very laid back, fantastic location - as central as it gets...and people are really friendly..and no-one ever seems to do any work!

With regard to application statistics...I think this year there were 32 (or 34..can't remember) applicants...of which 24 or so were interviewed..and 3 people were offered places (1 person had already had an offer from the year before)..i have the interview feedback letter somewhere...can't find it atm though.

Good luck!
Jesus & St Peter's seem the most obvious choices... Jesus aren't anywhere near as 'involved' as us around uni, though our bar is fairly dead. Definitely not Corpus Christi, hardly any are 'involved', most keep themselves to themselves.
Ooh i've booked corpus christi for the ox open day and queens for the cambridge one. They just sounded quite nice and had accomodation available for our visit! I still can't decide between oxford and cambridge so hopefully the visit will decide me and maybe i'll also decide on a nice college! x

I've an offer form Corpus and agree it is amazingly friendly. I'm not there yet, obviously, but if you have questions feel free to PM and I will try to help.

I think I should stand up for Keble, it hardly ever gets mentioned on here, if ever. Its big, but not overwhelming, its not exactly as homely as St Peters, due to its size, but its certainly friendly with a few uniquely weird buildings. Its not too far out of the centre either, it took me around ten minutes maximum to walk there and you get to walk past the beautiful gardens on the way. And of course, if you get in, which I'm sure you will, then I'll (hopefully) be there and thats a reason as good as any  .

I made an open application as I'm about 11 hours on the train away from Oxford so visiting wasn't really an option. I got LMH, which seemed very friendly and laid back when I was there for interview, which the alternative prospectus agrees with, but it's certainly not central.

i think going for open application is a bad idea - it just seems to suggest that you can't be arsed to go and decide for yourself.....are the director of studies, or the people interviewing, told which candidates are open application? obviously the admissions officer knows, but they they keep it to themselves? I just ask this because i felt i had to pick a college because open application just seemed wrong. And anyway, there were colleges i KNEW i didnt want to be at, so had to pick one of the good ones in the end - we'll see if i chose well (assuming i get the grades)
