Worried about Quorn

I tried cooking Quorn pieces tonight, made it into a 'chicken' stir fry, and enjoyed the meal...

Then I was on the internet and found all this information about how Quorn can make you really ill, vomiting diarrhoea hives etc.

I'm a hypochondriac by nature and I'm freaking out! Not definitely sure I cooked it for long enough either. Really really worried that I'm going to end up throwing up tonight. Cooking Quorn instead of meat was supposed to be my way of avoiding getting sick because of food!!

I've eaten raw quorn and survived! Unsure whether it has shortened my life span though
I've never heard about quorn making you sick... and I think that as it's not meat it's pretty much cooked anyway? My quorn mince looks cooked already when I get it out the bag, more about heating it up?

It's on the internet, so it has to be true, huh?

Don't worry about it, unless you're allergic to any of the ingredients you'll be just fine.
pahaha quorn...you'll be fine. Most foodstuffs are unhealthy when consumed in large quantities. Everything in moderation i say.

Why must people believe everything they read on the internet? Not everything on the internet is true, stop buying into all this rubbish. Quorn is not going to kill you. If it was going to, I would have been dead a long time ago and last time I checked, i'm still going :p: Honestly though, you'll be alright. I eat it fairly regularly and i've never become ill because of it. Don't believe everything you read on the internet!

I've had Quorn twice in my life and I threw up both times. And I'm the kind who never throws up normally.

You're unbelievably paranoid. I've eaten quorn looooads.

I don't eat it because it's mould, and not of the mushroom variety. And real meat tastes much nicer. I'm sure you won't die though, don't worry.
I had a quorn curry tonight....mmmm yummy
Quorn is completely harmless, although if you think about what it is, completely disgusting.
The high levels of RNA from the mycoprotein can cause a build up of uric acid, in turn, forming gaut. But this is removed by enzymes and heat treatment during production, so I think it's safe.

Not really, it's just natural fungi, grown in controlled environments... I'd rather eat quorn that something which was alive once, and which you don't know what was exposed to.

I mean, I'm not against meat-eaters, but I'd rather not have something alive on my plate..and as long as people don't berrate me about being a vegetable, I won't tell them off for eating animals!

I know what is, I take it you haven't seen what it looks like when it's growing.
i'm actually allergic to quorn, severe vomiting etc. It's only recently that i found out and if i was to eat it again it would apparently make me more ill than before. Not quite sure why, obviously a red-blooded meat eater....roar!
the buzz on quorn is that a small percentage of people are allergic to it and it makes them ill.

if you'r not allergic, you'll be fine
score! in a minority
Relax! The symptoms you read about are if you are allergic to it. (The box doesn't carry an allergy warning which is what people are lobbying for) Have you eaten mushrooms before? If you can handle those, you can handle this. It's a type of fungi. Which sounds a whole lot worse than it really is! Although, to be honest with you? The fact that you felt well enough to write this post and haven't gotten sick yet makes me think you'll be just fine

Why not just eat mushrooms, instead of texturised stuff that's created?

Just to say that I am still ill a week after eating a Quorn sausage. Not happened to me before though. I have feverish moments, cramps and persistent diarrhoea. I'm unable to eat a meal without painful cramps and nausea so can only snack. I continue to lose weight. It is, without question the Quorn sausage, as I began to feel sickly within an hour or so of a veggie breakfast which was cooked beautifully, and separate to the meat bring cooked in the cafe. Also, the immediate indigestion tasted of the sausage. I'm not sure I would be able to get to the bottom of whether or not it is me who has developed an allergy or if it was the storage and preparation at the cafe. This could really only be determined by eating another Quorn sausage which I have risk assessed as not a healthy option. I don't wish to blame anyone. Stuff happens. However, the only caveat to this is for vegetarians to be aware that mainstream cafes are unlikely to be cooking vegetarian options regularly so there could be a storage issue. A risk assessment would indicate that the best course of action is to avoid products that don't have a regular turn over. When I eventually recover from this I will pursue this course of action. Hey ho.
