    Hi,

I'm looking to buy some desktop/shelf speakers for my uni room.

I'd want to spend approximately £50. I want the best sound quality possible, and would be fine with a sub being included (but not if it distorts badly). Was wondering if anyone had bought any decent speakers recently and could recommend?

    Thanks.

Are you talking about powered or un-powered (i.e. hifi speakers) ?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking for some that are perhaps larger, and pack more of a punch? Still keen about the sound quality though

    UPDATE:

    I bought these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B..._detailpages00

However, I was wondering whether there's an attachment I could buy separately to the speakers that would allow me to control the volume easier? Any ideas?

I am not too sure what you mean; the speakers are unpowered/ hifi and hence you will need an amplifier anyway and that will have a volume control.

    Thanks for your advice,

I'm a bit of an amateur at this, but the speakers look amazing! What would i need ti get exactly to ensure they work? (links/suggestions would be great)

Would this be ok? Or would it completely mess up the quality of the speakers:

    They are indeed nice speakers.
I think that the amp that you link to (a T_Amp) would drive the speakers in a pleasing way.
I do not have this amp, nor have I heard it live, however, A T-amp and a set of bookshelf speakers really can give great sound.

    Thankyou for your advice.

What cables would I need to attach the speakers to the amp, and then the amp to the laptop/phone?

I can only seem to find suppliers of 'stereo cable', although i'd rather buy pre-built cables. Are there any cheap suppliers that you know of?

I need two male-male, two female-female and one 'banana' to 'headphone jack' type cable...right?

This should be ok http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Mounta...s=RCA+to+3.5mm If you have an older iphone, itouch, ipadetc … then this may give a slight improvement http://www.amazon.co.uk/High-Grade-C...=RCA+to+iphone Speaker cable: http://www.amazon.co.uk/105-Strand-P...=speaker+cable

I personally use this company http://www.kenable.co.uk/product_inf...oducts_id=6940 as their goods are of high quality and are the cheapest I've ever known for pre-built cables and connectors. You can even save on postage if you fancy a trip to St Helens.

Nope. Male 3.5mm jack to twin male phono to go between laptop and amp. Speaker cable for each speaker will have twin male banana plugs at the speaker end, but will be bare at the other (the amp end) to connect to the amp you're looking at. Selection of banana plugs is here: http://www.kenable.co.uk/?cPath=48_215

You shouldn't need any female plugs at all.
