Probably in one dimension, so either left/right or up/down.

Depends on where this comes from. In M2 upwards, you could be in two dimensions.

Really? I thought that is in the M4 edexcel spec.

In M2 it can appear in vector form in terms of i and j. Beyond that is, as you say, in M4.
