IB Imperial Offers

I'm pretty sure there must already have been a thread like this somewhere (and if there was, just ignore this!) but so far from what I've seen on the Imperial forum, most people are doing A levels and discussing A level offers.

So I was wondering, what offers have people doing IB been getting?

They've asked me for 38 with 6's in bio and Chem/Math for Zoology.

Your turn. *points finger at reader*

Personally don't do IB. Most applicants from the UK and overseas use A levels.

I think you'd better post this in the IB sub forum.
anyway, my imperial offer for maths was 38 pts, 6 maths 6 physics

i don't know where spencer11111 got that most overseas applicants use A levels, that's not true.

G104 - MSci in Maths with a year abroad

38 with a 66 in HL maths and physics

although one of my classmates got an offer for mech eng requiring 38 with 77 in HL maths and SL further maths, which was ridiculous..

i also very much enjoyed rubbing it in his face..

how can you be predicted up to 47 points? isnt the IB out of 45? (i havent got a clue how it works. im in the stupid french bac)

I take a 7th subject (SL Further Maths), which brings my possible total up to 52

just so you know, the IB is graded out of 7 in 6 subjects, plus a possible 3 "bonus points", which depend on your scores on your extended essay and theory of knowledge course..

Ekhm. Is this classmate you refer to Fumi, by any chance?

Yes yes. I know this because it's Kasia. Hello! *waves*

I would love to move this thread, really, except A) I don't know how to! and B) isn't it more relevant to Imperial... I don't care what IB offers people got from other universities, quite frankly haha.

Also, I also don't think it's true that most people overseas do A levels. IB's becoming increasingly popular (if you can call a system popular) and most countries have their own national systems.
To go a little off-track, I read a bbc article recently which claimed that almost 40% of students taking A levels got A's. Is that a little high, or is it just me? It also said that only 10-20% of IB students get 7's.

Looking at the flag and the initials, it hit me that it was probably you :p:

Are Pierre and Fumi accepting their offers do you know?

Anyone doing IB accepted for biology by any chance? Just curious to see whether they raised the bar (from a 36 to a 38) just for me or for most other applicants too.
For each content subject A levels tend to study it deeper and the questions ask tends to be tougher. However, there is serious grade inflation happening for A levels but the AEA (advanced extension award) is getting it fixed.

Students from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and all those commonwealth countries tend to offer A levels.

Well, for many subjects we use A levels textbooks and mostly we cover the same material as they do (maybe we go into a little less depth, but not significantly less). Bear in mind we have to do six subjects, not three (or however many most A level students do), and have to take care of CAS hours, the extended essay, AND TOK.

Aaaaalso, some top Singaporean schools have introduced the IB... ACS and SJI for instance.
lol i did FM SL too but i was not really good at it. for the offer i got last year (as far as i remember) it was 38/45 (excluding FM), 7 in maths HL, 6,6 in phy, chem HLs

HOW did you manage to get a 7 in Higher Math? Judging by the fact that you're currently studying it, you're most probably amazing at it... what on earth did you do to get so good? (excluding natural ability of course, that's a bit hard to pick up overnight :p:) Lots of past paper questions? Theory? Personally, HL Math is the bane of my existance and I would give so much to be able to go back in time and un-take it

 euanovsky, how come your offer was higher than the typical?

um was that high? i thought thats the normal offer, like 38/45, 7,6,6 in HLs

the standard offer from the faculty of maths is a 38 with a 66 in HL, 6 in maths, and a 6 in another relevant subject (usu. physics)

Top Singaporean schools are Raffles JC, Hwa Chong JC and Victoria JC. All of them use the A level system.

Bear in mind most students from these schools do 4 A levels. Many of them also offer anywhere from 1 to 3 Special papers, so difficult that IB students can only imagine.

For the TOK, there is either a General Studies or a General Paper that A level students have to offer.

Doing A levels is more like university work. You specialize in the few disciplines and excel in them. Forcing people to do one science, one maths, one humanities one ... is basically still a board education to speak of, the purpose of GCSEs, not A levels.

I always find it funny that politicians want to switch A levels to IB just because of the grade inflation there. Firstly, it is so easy to add an A* grade just to fix the problem. Secondly, there are already AEA papers around that are targeted at the top 10% of the A level cohort. They are extremely selective. Amongst those who attempted only 20% got a Dist and another 20% got a Merit. Hence only the top 2% will get a Dist overall.

Depth and flexibility are what A levels is about.
