My best teacher did a degree in Mechanical Engineering and he teaches A level Physics. He's also very good at Maths and can easily teach Maths/Further Maths. With a Civil Engineering degree you can teach lots of subjects including said subjects with no problem.

I have a feeling (from the research I did a couple of years ago), you should be fine for Physics and Mathematics. I think which areas of Design & Technology you can teach depend on the specific degree you did (e.g. clearly you can't teach Textiles or Food Tech. with a Civil Engineering degree ) - you should be OK to teach design-based and manufacturing-based subjects though (Resistant Materials maybe?).

Hi there,

I'm starting a degree in Civil Engineering this september but I was wondering if it would be possible to go into teaching in Design & Technology at Secondary and maybe at A Level.

im currently training to be a design tech teacher at the moment.

as well as the obvious dt subjects some schools also do btecs in engineering which im sure you would be perfect for.

if you need any more help feel free to pm me. Liam:smile:

cool. which uni degree did you study? i would like to teach product design, or Resistant Materials, along those lines.

yeh that is what i am teaching along with systems and control as this is my speciciality (did it at gcse and a-level).

the big long name for my course is BSC (hons) design technology (secondary education) leading to QTS.

I am studying at bangor but I know Edgehill, brighton, bristol, manchester met, sheffield hallam and think its goldsmiths in london all do this course.

What about Architecture? is it possible to become a DT Product Design teacher with a BA in Architecture plus QTS?
