Solicitors may choose to go out of the law for a while (career break) and choose not to take out a practising certificate during that period. These have to be renewed annually and costs several hundred pounds. Normally the SRA will require a returning solicitor to undertake a refresher course.

If a solicitor commits a serious disciplinary matter, he will be struck off the roll of solicitors, not merely deprived of his practising certificate. There is usually no way back.
