Is Devonshire self-catered different?

Sorry, I know there are loads of threads about accomodation at the moment.

Basically I applied for my accomodation a couple of months ago, and I put Devonshire self-catered as my prefered choice. On the surface, the profile of it sounds great to me - has a bar, common room, looks really nice from pictures, seems like a great location, plus I like that I can pop across to the catered bit if I can't be arsed to cook lol.

But obviously the people you live with are extremely important, and I can't help but be put off by the reputation Devonshire seems to have. I'm a state school girl through and through, and strongly left-wing, so if it is packed full of public school toffs I think I'd be better off picking somewhere else...Its not that I expect them to be horrible, or that I wouldn't even give them a chance, but ultimately I want to be around (or have a higher chance of being around) people from a similar background who have similar views/attitudes to me. It's something really important to me.

So BASICALLY, is it only really the catered part that lives up to its reputation? Would self-catered be okay? Or would you reccomend that I ask the accom office to change my preference (which would be to James Baillie Park)? I'd really appreciate some objective advice. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I just read over this and realised I came across as quite a ********. Sorry, I hope I didn't offend anyone - I do accept everyone and don't make judgements of people before I know them. This didn't come across how I wanted to, its actually quite hard to explain...But I hope people know what I meant.

Hey, I'm not at uni yet but i'm in the same position as you.
I'm thinking of putting Devonshire or JBP as my prefered choice, self-catered. But i'm also wondering whether I want to be in Devonshire if it's full of snobs! Sorry if it's not, it's just what i've heard.

Yeah well I really like dev, I’ve worked for the Labour party since I was 14 so I don’t really want be surrounded by public school born with a silver spoon in their mouth hurrah’s. None of the other places come close in my opinion ( except the place over looking the dock the inside looks a bit naff though) I think I’ll give this a shot. BTW I have a 32 inch LCD lol do u think I can bring it with ?

Im am aware that he went to a public boarding school. There is a differnce between somebody who goes private and somebody who is a "rah" and i didn't say i couldn't get on with them either. Furthermore i can't think of a single labour rah :s-smilie: umm Lord Falkner possibly.

ok can u please tell me wat a 'rah' is ? i was gonna apply there but ur scaring me ...

so wat does it actually mean ...???
Lol ok buddy.....If 'rah'= State school all the way through, plays rugby and football at youth level, and has mates that work as carpenters, plumbers, bricklayers etc. Then yeah i am one. Just because people are not interested in your political labour party nonsense doesn't mean they are not from working class backgrounds, in very much so working class areas. South Wales= Coal mines! Get a life mate your not going very far with your narrow minded attitude!

Lol and after a bit of research it turns out he's politics student!!!! Who would have thought it!

If you're having all these doubts about whether Devs is 'too posh' then I dunno, go for a cheaper accomodation?

Seriously though, it's a very silly reason to not pick somewhere to live, just because, by stereotype, people are from a different background to you or have different political opinions, is this not life? Uni is all about getting on with people completely different from you, that's the fun of it.

And do you really think politics matters? Since coming to uni I have not had one conversation about Politics, and no one cares at all about mine... we're too busy having fun, not doing essays and going to the pub!

For god sake why do you keep harping on about the Labour party? I made one minor link with politics and you keep going on and on about it. As you are Welsh I believe the Labour party should be extremely important to you as your country is about to go down the toilet without Labour governing it, but that’s not for here. If you did some reading you would know the most contentious thing about Devonshire is its supposed "rahness", that is the big talking point. In fact you won't find a single thread on Devonshire which doesn’t mention it.

Where did i say politics mattered? I said I’ve worked for the Labour since i was 14, I then rattled of a list of things that I don't like many of which are the attributes of rich tory offspring (coincidence I’m sure) . Btw you should look into the way Leeds selects students for accommodation. Do you like classical music? WTF has that got to do with anything? Do you like extreme sports? Etc. The questionnaire actually asked me if I was into politics and public affairs. Leeds put like with like. Im quite surprised their isn’t a political party question or at least a sociological question, that’s a lot more relevant in creating a environment that’s harmonious that some of the questions I filled in. If you’re Muslim a Christian etc you can actually opt to be with those sorts of people although Leeds do say this won’t always be possible. Likewise one can express a wish not to be around one of those groups.
Devonshire houses all sorts of people, it just tends to attract a lot public school students because it has a very 'communal feel' -- I get the impression that everybody knows everybody, which can be a great adavantage, and there seems to be quite a few social events. I, myself, live at James Baillie, and it's perfet for me. It's modern, clean and relaxed, and, like Devonshire, is in a brilliant location. It's purely personal opinion, but i would say this: If you're a big 'social' person, then Dev may be for you; if you enjoy socialising, but don't like being right in the mix of it, then James Baillie will be better. Either way, they're both in a similar location, both are nice (one older, one newer), and I'm sure you'd be happy at either.

'As you are Welsh I believe the Labour party should be extremely important to you as your country is about to go down the toilet without Labour governing it' - Again what has that got to do with the question about Dev asked to start the thread??? Stop trying to impose your political views on others..... 'I believe'.....Well good for you, but you must understand that others may not 'believe.' So i think it's best you stop worring about World issues, you'll be going on about the Iraq war next now lol! Keep your opinions to yourself, as others do not wish to hear about them..... And when you do go to uni please don't talk about such issues over a quiet pint otherwise you will find yourself without many friends in the future to have a quiet pint with lol!!!!

Suprisingly I have looked at the way Leeds 'selects' students for their accomodation. I'm IN Leeds accomodation.

Those questions, I thought, were to group people with similar interests in the same flat and stuff so you do have stuff in common and not stuck with people who are polar opposites of you. Yeah ok, out of all the accom here, Devs is probably the most rah, but the people I know that live there aren't like that. I was just saying that if there are reasons why you don't want to go to an accom like the stereotypical residents of said Halls then either don't go for it, or get over it. And tbh, Leeds isn't very rah in my experience, compared to places like Durham. But then I don't have a problem with it, as though they may be 'rich snobby tories', most people are actually quite nice.

Yeah i get that but its open to abuse. I still belive that a political or social class question should be there.

I didn't say i had a problem with it lol nor did i try and convince anybody of my political view.

^^^ That was ma first post. Just becuase i don't want to be "surronded" by them does not mean i won't be ok with the od few. I don't want to be surrounded by them thats all. You should really look at the perception of other leeds students. I am yet to find a single post about dev that does not go on about its rahness. Other halls trigger talk about a million other things, but not this one.
All this rah stuff is really getting on my tits now.

And just when it seems like the labelling frenzy can't escalate any further, people go and throw politics into it.

For the last time...

DEVONSHIRE HALL IS A HALL OF RESIDENCE.
IT IS A BUILDING WHICH ACCOMODATES STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS.
LIKE ANY OTHER STUDENT ACCOMMODATION, YOU SLEEP THERE, EAT THERE, DRINK THERE, POSSIBLY MAKE FRIENDS THERE AND THAT IS IT.
IT IS NOT SOME KIND OF ELITIST POLITICAL INSTITUTION NOR IS IT EXCLUSIVE TO THOSE THAT ATTENDED PUBLIC SCHOOL.
IT HOUSES PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE.

To be honest, if anybody has those kinds of stubborn sterotypical views then I doubt they'd fit in at university at all.
