Different genres a known for different iconography and an audience expects these things when watching it. For example, in a horror film about vampires you would expect a cross, or stake. These things allow the audience to understand the film easier as they know what to expect. Also the genre of films are really to attract a certain audience, so for example a urban realism would attract teens whereas a noir would attract older people as this what the generations were brought up on. It's all down to stereotypes really.
Finally if you think about the uses and gratification theory you will see that genres fit into all the category's.
