Due to not ever being in one, the only piece of relationship advice I've been given is "don't do it"

Clearly the lad had a very good relationship...

I've given myself the best relationship advice.

For me it was about not continuing to lower my self respect enough to involve myself with some body who behaved in such an indecent manner. I don't deserve that level of disrespect, and thus the best option was to leave, regardless of my feelings for him. The lack of guilt and care reinforced my decision, too.

Don't go changing to try and please them. You've never let them down before.

You have to love yourself before you can love anyone else.

That relationships are a two way street. You have to compromise in a relationship sometimes and think of the other person which can be hard if you're used to only thinking of yourself.

Don't assume anything just because that's what you would do.

    - Don't assume they aren't dating or speaking to anyone else , just because you're not
    - Don't assume they like you/they are single just because they flirt with you
    - Don't assume that they are always telling the truth when it comes to past relationships or family

Also to trust your gut instinct - if something isn't right, or doesn't feel right, look into it and understand it and deal with it, don't just brush over it, assuming it will go away.

Never have a relationship with anyone who puts you down in public - or tells you how to spend your own money.

    - if they like you or love you, they will never do anything to hurt you
    - always get your grades and think about guys later
    - there's no point getting into a relationship at this point, you're too young and don't know what you want
    - you always have to communicate whilst being in a relationship. Don't assume they know what you're thinking
    - try and look at things from an outsiders point of view and not from your heart, be objective.
