    Aren't is a word but generally speaking, you want to avoid using contractions in formal essays.

    Yes, but it is too informal for an essay. Instead, use 'are not'.

    You can even say aren't I as opposed to amn't I, that being the exception to the inversion in questions (though apparently amn't I is common in Ireland, and it sounds cool.)(Well aren't I's the norm anyway.)

    Though you don't say are not I, you say am I not? and avoid using aren't I in essays, use am I not? as given.
