    First off, you'd be better in the maths subforum rather than this umbrella forum. Did it get moved here, or did you place it yourself - I ask as a lot of maths is ending up here.

    Regarding your actual question.

    1) Yep.

    2) From the beginning use the formula sec^2 = 1+ tan^2, to get a quadratic in tan.

    Yeah I tried to post in maths but it got moved here.
