if I took an AS degree, is it true I will be exempt from up to 8 exams? Also if I did get an AS degree, how much quicker would it be for me to actually qualify as an actuary, 3 years would you say?

Yes you would be exempt from CT1 - 8, provided you do well and meet the requirements (i'm not sure if it's all uni's - but for CASS (City) and Herriot Watt this is the case).

Well if you pass the remaining exams (CA's,ST's, SA's) all first time or atleast second time (this isn't easy at all so be realistic), and you could get your 3 years worth of work experience, then yes the minimum time it would take would be 3 years.

It's extremely rare to see someone qualify in 3 years, average time is usually 4 to 6 years.
