I think I'd much rather do phys & phil.. will I be allowed to change course? I don't have any essay subjects at A-level, so do I have any chance whatsoever? Should I ask one of my tutors?

Yes, mentioning it to your tutors is probably the best option Having done an essay subject at A level certainly isn't crucial.

I'd get on and mention it sooner, rather than waiting too long (though they may say you can't change, or that you should wait until second year - though I think at this point in term, you could just switch now, and catch up without it being too bad). If I was you (assuming you don't think your tutor would mind) I'd go and knock on their office door and ask what they think.

Obviously be prepared to have a good reason for your desire to switch (that's not just "I don't really like physics".

Yeah I spoke to a tutor today. I'm pretty excited, though by no means is it settled.
As if that's my reason! you must have such a low opinion of me..
