I have been working through some questions regarding the arithmetic sequences for core 1. For the most part, where you get the sigma notation questions and finding the sum and using the formula, I'm fine with. However, in the wordy questions I keep failing to apply my knowledge, I can't seem to get to grasps with it. Any tips?

Read it, underline key parts, and before you start answering questions make sure you define things, like a = ..., d = .... , n = ... and so on with a '?' if you're not meant to know it yet.

It might help to highlight key words like 'first term' and 'common difference' [in wordy question this is sometimes given as 'increase by'/decrease by'] and then do what SeanFM has said.
Also make sure you are clear whether you are finding a specific term or a sum.

You aren't alone in finding this difficult and it will improve if you keep practising - there are loads of past papers!
