I'm going to Glasgow, not to do vet med though. I couldn't get the results for vet med, so I'm doing a different course (Molecular and Cellular Biology) with much lower requirements.

Sorry if I'm not allowed to post here as I'm not doing vet med

hope to see you all there!!!
current vet students. PLEASE tell us all what the uni and course is like!!
Glasgow is the best! You guys have made a great decision! I absolutely LOVE it here! The course is ****ing hard work with exams at the end of every term but we have so much fun in between! Back when I decided I wanted to go to Glasgow I got a lot of ppl saying to me "why would you want to go there?! Over Edinburgh?!" (Being a southerner, most people have a high opinion of Edinburgh....and in their opinion Glasgow is well....awful! Despite the fact that most ppl back home have been to neither! ) But I am so glad I chose to come here. Because you are out at the vet school from 1st yr, you mix tons with people from other years. The vet school is so relaxed and friendly! For example, for EMS they are so relaxed about what you want to do, both clinical and preclinical. Other vet schools say you have to do this and that but our requirements are so much more lenient.

Basically you will all have a great time! Virtually guaranteed!

wat sort of stuff do you be learning in 1st yr?on your ems can you decide whether you go to a practice or farming/lambing experience?wats glasgow like as a city?since il probably be leaving home on my own so i hope its easy to make new friends? ive heard the night life is good!suits me!lol!what is your weekly timetable like, how many hours per day/week? sorry for all the questions hope someone can reply!thanks
In 1st you cover 4 subjects which you then continue with in 2nd year:
Anatomy (you cover stuff like the bones, forelimb and hindlimb, embryology and neuroanatomy and then in 2nd year you do all the systems, so cardio, GIT etc), Physiology, Biomolecular sciences (which is basically an extension of biology a level) and Animal Husbandry.

I'm in 3rd year so my memory of 1st year timetable is a little vague! I remember going out TONS and TONS in 1st year (sadly don't go out so much any more!), so it can't have been too bad. You have lectures every day but they won't be 9 till 5, it'll be 9 till 1 or something like that. And you'll have anatomy on fridays lol that I remember, as we all went out every thursday so dissections on a friday were always interesting...! And so fridays are a long day. You will also go to the vet school farm on some tuesdays.

You will easily make friends. Glasgow always gets loads of Irish folk! Have you decided which accommodation to go to? Wolfson hall isn't the nicest but LOADS of vets go there so if you are worried about making friends, that is place to go! You will meet so many ppl, as you all eat together and have a common room where in the 1st few weeks, everyone hangs out in. Plus everyone walks to the vet school together as it's so close. If you are a posh person, go to Queen Margaret! haha! Their rooms are REALLY nice! Murano is a great place to meet ppl too but the accommodation can vary in how nice it is! You spend about half your working week at the vet school so it is quite handy to be at Wolfson because it's so close.

The night life is awesome, so many places to go, no matter what sort of person you are. We have two unions - Queen Margaret (QM) and Glasgow University (GU). All vet events are held at the GU and it's vvvvvvvvvvv cheap but does have a funny smell....! The QM is nice and often has bands play. Thursday night is 'Hive night' in the GU and in 1st year we spent nearly every thursday there! Then of course there are numerous pubs and bars and clubs all pretty reasonable for prices. The ABC in town is class!

For EMS, in the 1st 2 years you have to do 12 weeks 'pre clinical'. Which has to be 2 weeks lambing, 2 weeks dairy, 2 weeks horses, 2 weeks intensive farm (pigs or poultry) and then 4 weeks whatever you want.
From 3rd year till you qualify you have to do 26 weeks clinical - i.e. vet practices. And you can do whatever vet practices you want. As long as you see a bit of everything, if you are especially interested in one field you can spend a huge amount of time working in it. There are no set number of weeks you have to spend doing equine for example. You just have to spend 1 week at an abattoir and 2 weeks working at the vet school's small animal hospital. The rest of the weeks are your choice.

Anyway hope that helps!

where do the vet students tend to rent flats etc. after 1st year? approx how much is rent?
It varies, I have been living in the west end, near Byres Rd for the past 2 years and my rent is £270 each (was £260) excluding bills. Living here is great for going out but before I brought my car up, was a pain in the butt getting to the vet school every day. However a large number of vet students live in Anniesland, where the rent tends to be cheaper £240 odd but it really does vary. I'm moving to Anniesland next year because we spend every day all day at the vet school now and it really is a waste of petrol money living in the west end!
how far is the vet school away from away the main uni campus? is year 1 and 2 taught at the main campus and the clinical years 3,4 and 5 taught at the vet school?is that how it works?
The vet school is much closer to the main uni compared to any of the other vet schools. It's about a 40-45 mins walk, a 10 min drive off peak times and a 20 min drive at busy times, and a 15 min bus ride.

No, this is where Glasgow vet school is very different from the other vet schools. Because the vet school is so easy to get to, you are up at the vet school from day one. In 1st year you spend about 1/2 your time at the vet school and the other half at the main uni. In second yr it's more like 2/3 at the vet school and 1/3 at the main uni. For the rest of the years, you are at the vet school the whole time.

The only reason any lectures are held at the main uni is because there aren't enough lecture rooms at the vet school! And you have about 2 lab practicals for biomolecular sciences at the main uni in 1st yr as well.
wats the accomodation like in glasgow,is it near the main campus or closer to the vet school?wats the prices like and also is glasgow an expensive city in general?
As I mentioned before, Wolfson Hall is where most of the 1st yr vet students go to as it's advertised as the closest to the vet school. It's a 10 min walk and seeing as you spend half your week there it is nice to be so close. However Wolfson is far away from the main uni so you have to walk 45 mins to get there, or get 2 buses or make friends with someone who has a car  Good points about Wolfson are that you meet TONS of people because you all eat together and socialise together for the 1st few weeks. However the food gets vvvv repetitive and there is nothing special about the accommodation itself, pretty plain.
Queen Margaret is about 15 mins walk from the main uni but about half an hour's walk from the vet school. It's about 5 min walk from Gt Western Road though, where you can get a bus to the vet school. I had a friend there who actually really enjoyed the walk to the vet school. It's really nice accommodation as it's relatively new. However you don't meet as many people, my friend got introduced to all the vets through me, because I knew so many of them from living at Wolfson.
At Murano you would meet a TON of different ppl however it's a little scabby. Basically most of the stuff about the accommodation should have been sent to you, I only really know about Wolfson and QM as I lived at Wolfson and visited QM quite a lot. Whereas I only went to Murano once or twice. Then there are also other uni accommodation available too, some of which is vvv close to the main uni. As for the prices, look them up in the accommodation cos they have probs changed since I was in them!

Glasgow is vvv cheap city. However they keeping uping bus fares.....! Worked out cheaper for me to drive everywhere! Though getting into town is vvv cheap - the subway is £1 single and £1.90 to go whereever you want as many times as you want! Drinks are dirt cheap in the union and aren't too bad elsewhere.
i was wondering what the stance of the scottish unis (glasgow in particular) is in relation to work experience. are they known to be fussy about work experience or are the more relaxed?how much should i gain roughly?i have currently 4 weeks of experience in veterinary practice(large and small animal) so what other experience should i aim to get for the scottish unis? dairying?lambing? thanks

when i phoned Glasgow, they told me that they wanted at least two weeks on some kind of farm. i did lots on a dairy farm and no lambing and got an offer, so i guess that as long as you learn something while your on work experience it doesnt really matter if you do all that much. saying that i also volunteered on a pig farm, a kennels and a rescue centre during my holidays.
Just get as much as you can. The more you have, the less reasons they have of not giving you an interview. Dairy and lambing are both good to have done and if you can get some horse work in that would be good too.
yeh i already have a dairy placement in place but i am concerned about lambing since the lambing season is over!would it be possible to go lambing in the summer?do universities take into account the work experience you intend to get after you have applied?
Some do, I know RVC does but I'm not sure how Glasgow feels about it. But clearly you don't NEED lambing if Littlemissvet got an offer without it! Why not work at a pig farm or poultry? Or go to an abattoir or a vet lab for a day or so? Seeing vets is all well and good but they like to see you have got your hands dirty too. Lambing in the summer doesn't happen! Though I knew of a goat farm who's kidding season is in July?! I was going to work there before I applied but couldn't fit it in.
