    Longitudinal means the wave causes particles in the to vibrate in the same direction as the wave is travelling, about a fixed point (i.e: backwards and forwards).

    So if the wave is travelling horizontally, particles in the body will vibrate left-to-right.

    If the wave is travelling vertically, particles in the body wll vibrate up and down
