Hey, posting on behalf of a friend.

So he's doing his A2s right now, in the following subjects:

    Maths
    Computing
    Sociology

Two things to note. Is the lack of A level Economics okay considering the fact that it wasn't available at our sixth form? It should be fine if it's mentioned in the reference right?

And secondly, how restricting is the lack of further maths? The elite unis (Oxbridge, Warwick, UCL, LSE) are presumably off limits, but how badly would it affect him? Places like Manchester, Birmingham, Exeter; would they be fine (assuming he got the grades to get into them of course).

    Cheers.

The further maths or economics isn't too much of a problem from what I've read - I think it may be the lack of facilitating subjects that will restrict him from top unis.

Probably best to check the individual course requirements, and if there are no subject requirements - there's no harm in applying. Although other people will have stronger, more suited subject choices.

The lack of economics isn't a problem. Just get your reference to state it in your reference for added security.

Further Maths is desirable at top unis. However, it's desirable in the same way further maths is for chemical engineering. However, someone in my college got an offer from Cambridge for chemical engineering with A2s in physics, chemistry and maths, even though it explicitly says, unlike economics, they desire further maths.

If you got good AS', I'd apply to one of the top 5, one of the top 10, two Russel Groups and then a safe.

    Good luck
