At most medical schools are gcse's considered important? some people have told me that they are but others say they're almost irrelevant?? does it just depend on the uni?

Really does just depend on the university, someplace like Kings or Oxford of Birmingham are awful fond of GCSEs where as others just care about ASs or predicted A2s or focus more on UKCAT/BMAT...... best just to look into the universities you are interested in.

Absolutely, for some med schools (e.g Cambridge, Cardiff etc) GCSE's are a deciding factor while for others it has less/no weighting. However with that said, applying for medicine with the alphabet as your GCSE's might not be a great start.
