How to get in touch with old friends? watch

So about 10 years ago, when I was in infant school, I had some really good friends, but when I had to move schools I lost contact with them, and to be honest I regret this a lot.
Recently, I've been running into serious problems with my current friends in 6th form (well I don't think I can really call them that anymore), and on various youth groups and courses I've ran into people from other schools who know my original friends- this made me want to get in touch and at least get along after all this time, what should I do? send them a FB request and talk to them? or is it probably a bad idea?
