Broken toe. It hurts a ridiculous amount.. advice?

Yesterday was playing football, I pushed the ball past somebody, ran round them, got the ball went to shoot and they put their foot across me. I kicked them with full force in the ankle with the right side of my foot. I tried to walk and just collapsed in pain.

Having removed and examined, my toe, next one on from the smallest, was hanging forwards, almost entirely limp, but I CAN move it, very slightly - and overnight slightly more, but not very much up. With my fingers ive been wiggling it up and down gently to try and see if its getting any more mobile...

BUT, the BIG pain is that when I try and stand flat on my foot (right) that I did it on, it feels like the part of my foot behind that toe, has a bump in it, like a solid boney ball and when its pressure it hurts a ridiculous amount. As a result I cannot put that foot flat on the ground and apply pressure, or OUCH.

I know we break our toes often, but this seems particularly bad. Worst part is, I am currently in training for the London marathon in 3 weeks time... Im already prepared to pretty much walk it, but I just want to know if anyone has experienced this kind of injury, and how they dealt with it, so I can recover ASAP and get walking/running again. Many thanks,
Rob

Yes, I did this.

I took a lot of pain killers and put arnica cream on it. Sorted it out in a week.

rest it for a few days , if its properly broken and at a weird angle you may need to see a doctor to have it reset (break it again).

Get a lift to your local A&E and ask for an x-ray. If it is broken, it needs to be treated appropriately. You can't assess whether it's broken or not simply by looking at it.

They won't xray a toe. Well, at our local they won't. Best thing to do is to rest it and see how it is in a few days.

Why anonymous?...bizarre

I agree tho - its a clear cut case of needing to go to the A and E and get an X ray - the sooner the better. They can also give you mega strong pain killers if needed and maybe banage it up or something to help alleviate pressure.

Was on a friend's computer. Couldn't be bothered signing out and signing in under my own name. Dead lazy, me.

Ooh I've got that ball thing that feels like bone under my skin near my toe too where my friend sat on a chair on my foot a few months ago. It doesn't hurt too much anymore but maybe I broke it and it healed funny. Hmm.

Go doctors

Urgh.. everyone in my family/friends said no doctors necessary.. since its toelike, they wouldnt xray. And in other news, I am now walking without my crutches, and it hurts lots less.. maybe it was just a lot of swelling causing the pain.

^ Not true. It depends on the break.

I broke my big toe, like a compound fracture. Open and the bone needed to be snapped back into place ... can you imagine if they didn't x-ray that?!

I'd go to the Doc / A+E anyway. Yeah they might do nothing - but they might help!

More than likely they will just say to rest and use crutches - but better to be safe than sorry! If it is broken - it can heal wrongly etc

what? why not? i've had an Xray on a single toe or single fingers.. seems silly?

and the general rule is if it hurts it's a sprain it you can't move it it's broken, but either way if you're unsure or in a lot of pain you need to see a doctor. People on TSR can't really diagnoss you without seeing you, on top of having no medical experience.

If it hurts a lot and you can't walk properly without pain - see a doctor. I did a similar injury once and got my big toe x-rayed straight away. It wasn't broken but I couldn't walk on it properly for a few days.

It's best to know for sure either way and if it is broken it needs proper care.

i broke my toe three weeks ago and it's ok now. it was exactly how you'd described. everybody told me not to bother going to the rather inappropriately named "walk-in" centre ( i'd have felt rather silly going to a&e with people with severed limbs also in the waiting room!!) but after 24 hours i couldn't stand the pain. .

they sort of pushed my toe as it was bent out of place and it hurt like hell. from then on it was take ibuprofen, rest.. elevate it etcetc and it's fine now. well, perhaps still a little out of shape but i can walk on it with hardly any pain.

i imagine they'd do something similar for you, but i'm no doctor. if it doesn't require replacing.. or "clicking" into place, then maybe just sit it out. you could also try buddy strapping it to it's larger neighbour to take some of the pressure off it.

I splinted it the day it happened and every night since. Looking at both feet, aside from some massive brusing around the toe I did it to, the look the same-ish now, which they didnt before really cos of massive swelling. It still hurts, but it seems to get a bit better every day.
