Ive got a small problem. My decision for my firm offers is between loughborough and sheffield. I know i can use rankings which show sheffield better in compsci but worse overall but is there another good way to tell a difference between a good and a bad course without taking part in it first?

have you been to a open day?
speak to the course leaders for both universities ask about teaching methods, resources, marking and grading system. Discuss what modules you'll be taking - you can find this out on the website but ask questions about certain aspects about them. While you are seeing if the university is good enough for you, the university is seeing if you are good enough for them.

Also, google the admissions tutor and course leader and find out if they specialise in any particular area, and research this area. this will be your insurance as building a relationship with universities b4 you attend will allow leverage should you not get the grades you require.

    hope this helps
