At the age of 37 I'm seriously considering going to uni to train as a social worker.

My only concern is the financial side of things.

I have no dependants and my flat is rented from the local housing association. I know from past experience when I was out of work, my local council paid all my rent and council tax. Would they do the same if I go to uni on a full time course? I am also in recipient of disability living allowance.

I've tried asking my local council but they cannot give me a definitive answer.

    Thank you.

If it's just you, you're exempt from council tax as a full time student. Full time students may be entitled to housing benefit if they're receiving DLA. But your student loan counts as income.

Being a student doesn't count as unemployed. You should get council tax exemption but will have to use the accommodation part of your student loan to pay your rent.

    Thank you for your replies.

    It's not such a worry now. ;-)
