What should I expect going into this? Also, I'm wondering if it's worth going for visual effects or would it be more beneficial to go for a course more diverse like Digital Media?

The Animation/VFX course at Hertfordshire is (arguably) the best in the country. If you're looking for the best oppertunity to get into the industry with an ace portfolio, Herts is probably a good one. I went to the open day in August and attended the lecture on the course and 1) the course leaders are awesome, not to mention very well experienced 2) the standard of work coming out of it is amazing too.

If you're still hesitant about applying to VFX, I'd say look around for different places too. The competition to get in is quite tough so you've gotta make sure its something you're super passionate about. If you are passionate, there's not many better places for VFX
