GW Elliott School vs St Andrews

Right, so...

I've heard that St Andrews offers an excellent IR programme so it is my second choice after Georgetown (which, i think it's quite likely that I will be rejected)

However, a few days ago, I've got an offer from George Washington, Elliott School of International Affairs.

This was a completely unexpected offer (since I was missing a form, and thus I thought I wasn't considered) and now I am at a loss at which uni I should choose.

I know that St Andrews is good, but how good is it? Compared to Elliott School for example. I know that Elliott isn't quite the top school for studying IR but still, it is one of the best (behind Georgetown, Tufts and JHU I suppose)

Thanks in advance.....

Thanks for your reply,

Well, see the thing is, the schools in DC emphasise the fact that it's located in DC for reasons I'm sure you know (as a capital city, concentration of politics, diplomatics and internship opportunities regarding them etc etc) and I have to say it makes sense. Also, I've been to Washington once (not to any of the schools though, unfortunately) and I really quite liked it there. About St Andrews, I don't have much clue except for the fact that it's hogwarts and it has a beautiful school/campus. I'm planning to go to the open day on the 11th, and hoping to find out more about it.

So, regarding the environment, I might have an answer in april but to be honest, I don't really mind where I study, whether it is in a big city or a small one.

The thing I'm unsure of is, exactly how good is StA for IR? I mean I was frankly disappointed of StA's website on IR, whereas GW has a dedicated school and clearly seems to be keen on it. It's a stupid thing to compare, but then again, if it had a strong programme, wouldn't its website reflect this fact?

I am planning on attending St. Andrews next year and I know their IR program is very highly respected- it is top notch and they have top exerts at the uni. St. Andrews is quite beautiful and quaint and Hogwartesque and the open days are very well organized (I attended one in February). Maybe the open day will help you get a better feel for the university and the department. However, I do agree that DC is the ideal place to be for politics. It may depend on where you hope to reside after uni as well. I want to live in the UK, so it would make little sense for me to go to an American uni.

Both are good universities, and your going to get a top quality education at whichever you choose.

I don't know much about GW, but sounds like it has a much better location: St Andrews is quite isolated, and my friends there say its "dead" on the weekends because everyone goes to Edinburgh on the weekends to go out etc.

However St Andrews seems to have a good reputation in both the UK and the US - partly because of Prince William going there, so you could probably go into IR in either country after graduating. GW isn't so well known in the UK. I'd say it's as good a uni as Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, Manchester, Nottingham etc, but below Oxbridge Imperial and LSE.

I had a similar choice and reaserched it a lot. Basically what I found is St. Andrews is MUCH better regarded than GW but not evry one has heard of St. Andrews and the students here don't work as hard

I would say St. Andrews is better than GW Elliott School for undergraduate IR. So if you get rejected by Georgetown, definitely go to St. Andrews....Postgraduate is another story.
