Next Wednesday it is Diwali and then Thursday is the Hindu New Year and so I want to go home for those days. It is also the History Directed Studies Week so I won't be missing any of my lectures for History. But, I will miss my subsid (modules outside of my department i.e. in English Lit) lectures and seminars. Can you do this?

Every uni can set its own policy, so you need to ask where you are. Start with your course leader.

If mandatory attendance has been stated up front, then no, it won't be allowed and you agreed to it when you joined the course. If attendance is monitored, you should ask the lecturers who deliver the modules. At the very least, I would email the affected lecturers, copying in your course leader, saying that you plan to be absent and explaining why. It's good manners, which will make a good impression, so you don't just look like you're not turning up because you don't care.

Most universities will consider religious reasons acceptable for missing class, however they will want you to let them know and certainly at my uni at least you'd be expected to attend another groups seminar if there is one on a different day so you don't miss too much

Make sure you ask about what you might miss so you can revise it tot avoid falling behind missing a day or too is not a problem but just don't make a Habit of it.
