While non-whites, younger people and people in other countries are seeing falling death rates, a new study shows the reverse is happening for white men and women in the US aged 45-54.

    Due to:
    - Drug and alcohol abuse
    - Unemployment and poor financial affairs (financial stress)
    - Drug and alcohol abuse
    - Declining mental health

ok. Bill gates, are you the real bill gates?
and I feel nothing towards them, why are they abusing substances in this economy and funding their bad habits instead of funding their families/food/housing costs?

    :/

Nah, but the health complications that arise from poor diet are some of the leading causes of premature death in the US so it's strange to see it off the list
Financial stress = poor diet. Plausible.

Yeah, but it doesn't come to mind straight away. When I think of the phrase "financial stress" I think of debt..Obesity in the US is a pretty major health issue so it's really unusual to see it excluded from the list.
Just seems like the authors are trying to skew things.

So what have white middle aged Americans done that you think they deserve an early death?

I actually read an article about this recently. I'll just copy my reply to the BBC article I read on the issue.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-34714842

They were mostly talking about people in rural areas with a high school education or less. Most of the rural areas in the US are in the South. I really think several things contribute to this. The biggest reason would be economic, but I suspect that the enduring stereotypes about Southerners being stupid, inbred, and backwards get to people as well, especially if they have a thick accent and no college education.

I mean, think about it. If you grew up in a poor family and never got a higher education, but managed to find work... and then a recession hit, you lost that job and tried to move around looking for work, but everyone made fun of your accent and kept assuming you were some kind of backwards racist because of where you were from, and they all hinted that the world would be better off without you... I think that might get to you enough after a while that you'd be tempted to kill yourself and stop being a burden on everyone. Especially if your best years were already behind you and your kids were already raised.

I'm really glad I don't have a Southern accent or a Texas drawl, honestly.

The Economist mentioned this in an edition a few months ago. Their analysis was interesting and pointed to a lot of stress and diet (nothing new there then).
