I'd say it depends on where you plan on being employed. If you're looking within the EU, definitely French and German, as they constitute part of the big 3 of the EU languages, alongside English.

On a more global level, I'd say Mandarin and Arabic, possibly Portuguese or Russian

It depends on what you want to do. French and Italian are great for lit, German for commerce in Europe, Chinese for business, Arabic for politico-military careers.

I am currently planning on learning French (hoping to work in Finance then cross over into government work) -- anyone suggest any languages... to add to French?

French, German and Chinese; German being the most useful.

Other languages are not that useful because there are loads of native speakers living in the UK, who will arrive first if a job requiring these languages is advertised.

You just have to look on Reeds and see the number of applications for jobs with Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, etc.

I think French and German were the most highly requested ones.
