Is Bath expensive?

I'm having difficulty at the moment deciding which university to go to. I really like Bath, but the thing that worries me the most is how expensive living there is. I read somewhere that it's the most expensive place outside London in the UK. Although I'm not sure whether that's true, I do know it's definitely not the cheapest, especially since it's a tourist town. Looking at the accommodation prices after the first year, you can expect to pay anything up to £30 more a week than other places in the country. Would it be wrong for me to go somewhere else just because of money worries? :s-smilie:

I'd appreciate some help and insight into living costs. I'm hoping someone will tell me that Bath's not that expensive...

yeah, Bath is pretty expensive, I'm in Westwood atm so that is £76 a week, i think. Next year we've got a house for £75 per week, excluding rates.

Its expensive, but worth it

Yeah Bath is expensive-ish, but you get what you pay for :p:

I didn't mind paying an extortionate amount to live in such a beautiful city.

Consider it an anti chav/ned/kev rent...

Yes!Especially for an international student.but anyway I will go there and consider it really worth studying and living there.

I've heard people saying Bath is the most expensive place outside London, but I don't think its true. Places like Reading are meant to be just as expensive as London.

Housing is more expensive in the 2nd year, but thats the same everywhere. And if your willing to sacrifice some luxuries (we are students after all) you could get a place cheap enough I reckon.
The accommodation at Bath (On Campus) seems fairly reasonable to me...

Thats compared with Sussex, which want £101 + electricity bills for an En-Suite...

Terrible...
I thought it was quite reasonable at Bath - but I'm supposedly from a rich area of the country (doesn't feel like it though... you still get chavs!).

You think that's expensive... en-suite at Exeter next year is £147. Don't think I'll be going for that!

Bath is an expensive city to buy/rent in. But once you've got past that hurdle its no more expensive than any other city in the south of england. Ok so things like council tax are high - but students dont pay council tax anyway. Plus you get to live in one of the most beautiful cities in england, not far from one of the largest cities (bristol), some of the most stunning countryside (mendips, exmoor, dartmoor, cotswolds), and in a city with good transport links to the rest of the country.

The on campus accommodation, as much as we might moan about it, is probably among the highest quality around (especially solsbury and marlborough) and being a small city, "home" will never be too far from campus even in the 2nd year upwards. Being a tourist city there are plenty of jobs around, especially if you want to stay in bath over the summer season.

So yes, Bath is expensive, but its definately, 100%, worth it.

I remember reading the stats about Bath being the most expensive place outside London a couple of weeks ago. It was for average hotel prices though.. not living costs. I don't think the accommadation is over-priced. We've got a really nice new house for £75 a week, but we looked at some as low as £60 a week (they weren't as nice though of course).

Bath still has the odd chav... havent noticed too many thankfully. But there are a few homeless people which may surprise some people.

My rent for next year is going to be £69 per week, exc bills. Not too bad.

Hotels def are expensive Sarah, but if you need one, there's the youth hostel, and also the YMCA only charge £11 a night I think.

I disagree. I find Reading a hell of a lot cheaper personally. After all, Bath has NO Tescos. I wouldn't have gone if I'd have known that in advance.

Yeh... But I miss my tescos. I'm not used to this foriegn, orange coloured sainsburys nonsense. It didn't make my life taste better, that's fo sho

Out of interest... say you had £80-90 Money (after rent in halls) A week, would say thats plenty? Bearing in mind im quite a big drinker.

Looks like parents will pay for accomodation, and the rest will be loan/grant money. (I will get full amount)
is £82 per week expensive?

This is for quite a large room in the city of bristol...

Look average for BATH, as this is the BATH page.

For a large room its OK
