It disgusts me, could never be with a smoker. Hate the smell so would probably hate the taste on their lips.

It's because it's deemed "cool", and YOLO.

    Not that I smoke.

Addiction, of course. If you really really really really (... ad infinitum) want something you'd do anything to get it; you can't live without it once you've tried it; you won't care that it's bad for your health

originally tobacco was taken as a suppository, in the fashion of the Native Americans of Virginia. in this country the suppositories were wrapped in paper to prevent drying out.
some daring Elizabethan decided to see what would happen if he lit one end of the tube... the rest is history.
that is why people smoke cigarettes, instead of sticking them up their bum.

People usually fall into peer pressure, personally I find it disgusting, makes your breath smell and is so unhealthy... Like yourself I really am confused as to why people smoke.

Ah so I'm not alone in my snacking addiction...

I think the majority of people start to smoke due to peer pressure/ perceived image of smoking being cool... Then due to the nicotine they become addicted and it's pretty hard to stop, even if you want to.

Took my other half three attempts to quit, and he was genuinely sick of smoking- he is a cyclist and was fed up of feeling out of breath/ unfit.
