Hi, guys. I am applying for a post graduate course in Uk uni's for the next year. Was prepping up my personal statement and wondering if I should mention that I had blood cancer in the last year of my high school? This led to me having to complete the treatment and left just 3 month to complete the studies and give my exams. I scored a distinction too The cancer experience definitely changed me a lot in the sense that I became more serious and this reflected in my UG scores as well. Should i mention any of this in the personal statement? The fact that this experience tested my mental as well as physical strength and the fact I got over it reflects my abilities. Any suggestion would be appreciated! thanks

It's not really needed in the PS, especially because of the word limit (plus you want to draw more on your strengths than weaknesses). If you really want the unis to be aware of it I think it'd be better if it was included in the reference instead

Erm no. This happened more than 2 years ago. A postgrad PS should only be about why the course, why the uni, your suitability for the course and your career plans. You don't want to come across as looking for sympathy.
