I always say steven when I read it.

Is it deeeeedalus or dead-alus? I always say the latter in my head, but everyone in class says the former.

why is it steven and not stephen?

I had always assumed it was pronounced "Steven" (or that is how it sounded in my head). What is more likely for early 20th Century Ireland? Although saying that, what is more likely for James Joyce ?

Dedalus should (I believe) be pronounced "day-da-loos".

It's Stephen (pronounced Steven) Dedalus. The proper Latin pronounciation would indeed be 'Day-da-loos', as Death of a Joyce Scholar says, but if you actually pronounced it like that at a Joyce conference, you'd get a few laughs, and not in a good way. Stephen Dedalus. Pronounced as written.
