Never heard of any?

Except that the girls at the all girls (Ashburne is it?) are all virgins. But that one is rubbish anyway!

Erm, there aren't any as far as I know.

At a stretch, maybe Owens Park is known as being pretty sociable.

Well if you want some MAJOR sweeping generalisations, whch is what i guess you are after, here are a few. these are by no means accurate, and are exactly that, sweeping gneralisations....

Owens Park- lots of alcohol and puke
Richmond Park- Rich Man's park....who ever came up with that is some kind of genius.
Hume Hall and Dalton Ellis Hall - quieter than fallowfield halls, less 'party party' type halls.
City Halls - international students.

these are the totally superficial, generalisations that you could apply to the halls, but they are veeery shakey!

i am in a Victoria Park hall, and its lovely but a little quiet. The thing is, its difficult to give hall stereotypes because it depeneds on the people, and that changes every year! and also, people who you might think suit one hall, wont get there first choice and so end up somewhere else! so its really pick and mix!!

hope that is helpful, anyone who takes offence/disagrees, dont bother messaging me to have a go, i am just trying to give the OP my view on things.

J
Oak house: party central, dont expect any sleep during the first month/year. Very sociable, can feel claustraphobic i hallways. kitchens are a nice place to hang

Owens park: quite sociable, unlucky if you live in the tower, especially if fire alarms go off at 4 am and you cant use the lifts. corridors can be antisocial at times, feels like a hotel

Woolton hall: rah village, where the people with too much money live. some alright hall bar partys have been held. still wouldnt want to associate with most

Richmond park: very swish, once again - some people have too much money. quite sociable, like to party now and again

Canterbury court: find it on a map, try find it in person, wonder why no ones heard of it...

Victoria hall: private halls leased to man uni, some cool people there but a bit unsociable cos its not really in any campus. bit cramped

Victoria park campus: kinda quiet if you like that sort of thing

Whitworth park: very similar to oak house, slightly closer to town. hall bar is great for socials

North campus: you what?

hope that helps

Hey, I want to stay at Fallowfield and catered is one of my accomodation prerequisites, I'm not too fussed about having/not having ensuite rooms but there are only 3 catered halls in Fallowfield; Owens Park, Woolton Hall and Allen Hall. I'm not so thrilled about Woolton after the last post. I want a really sociable hall but I need to be able to work hard, play hard, etc. Owen's Park seems awesome but almost too big, is that a problem, that you don't really know many peeps apart from maybe just your hallways neighbours?
to be fair i reckon if you get along with the people at woolton you'll be alright. some of my mates who live at woolton hate it there and think most of the people are really pretentious, and the times ive been there you really stand out if you dont belong - especially in the JCR. armani shirts and gucci shoes? no thanks, not for me.

you also have to note that allen hall is in fallowfield, but not part of the main fallowfield campus where you find oak, owens, richmond etc. ok fair enough its literally next to the campus with only the man met building in between, but that can make a lot of difference. i enjoy being able to stroll to mates flats without having to leave campus. strange the amount of girls u see in pjs wandering around during the day...

if i were you i probably wouldnt bother paying the extra 20-something quid for catered halls. most people dont wake up for the breakfast, and the hassle of having set meal times is a pain. the upside is i get my friends meal tickets if theyre away for a few days = free meals for me. go self catered, cooking random meals with mates is fun. especially at 4 in the morning when you may have aquired considerable hunger from certain activities...
And also, the people I've spoken to have said the evening meal is between 5 and 6, and if you have lectures til 5 you often miss it...
People seem to think catering is okay but with hindsight they'd have gone self catering.

Although some people may argue that this isn't useful, I'm afraid I'd really like to know; what are all the halls' stereotypes?? They all must have them!! What sort of people etc. Many thanks

owens park is known for the 'trashy white people' who get drunk all day and all night. its a crappy dorm in my opinon..

weston hall + lambert and fairfield (city/north campus halls) is international students and more well off students (i lived in weston for my 1st year and it was a really good mix of local/international students)

oak house the same as owens park.. just as crappy with breeze block walls, you feel as though you're in prison

whitworth park - similar to owens park but a little better, and right next door to main campus.. oak house is all the way out in fallowfield

lol...interesting thread...how about sterotpyes of the people who live at the places...like..types of music...ethnicity..etc??????

I used to live in Wright-Robinson hall on North campus (that was just before the merger) back in the day all UMIST accommodation was cheaper and better spec than uni of, so applied there....

Cant say there were any problems, its better if u find fallowfield tedious...

true on the international students thing, but cheaper, biggest rooms i've seen in halls and washbasins...when i was there it was £54 p/w!!! those were the days!

music stereotypes hmm; richmans park: r and *******s

wright rob: anything other than the music i played... ie not dnb/not techno/not trance/ not ska/ not hardcore/ not punk

got the most complaints for listening to the exploited.... ah well good times!

hahahaha! nice one

Im in richmond park. If you want to meet as many people as possible and be more sociable go to oak house and owens park. Richmond park is nicer but quieter.

Hi Davep
How far is richmond park from Owen park then?
Do you still recommend it because i am planning to put it down as 1st choice...and do you think its better/nicer than sheavyn house?

thanks

Wherever you go you will meet people to get on with. Richmond park is 2 minutes from owens park and oak house on the fallowfield campus.

I like richmond park, the accomodation is nice but its not the most social hall. You will meet loads of people there, but the hall socials have all sucked apart from one this year.

To be honest loads of people put richmond as their first choice so you will be lucky to get it. I was on defered entry so got it.

Choose catered / self catered and then apply for your halls. As long as you go with the right attitude you will struggle not to enjoy yourself. If you dont get on in your halls, just apply for a transfer to different halls. Two of my current flatmates did that, and are much happier. It is just luck of who you are put with rather than sterotypes.

You wont have to do much work anyway, it is only your first year after all.

I heard that like 90% of International Students get chucked into Oak House?

pfft...i wasn't in OP in my first year, but I had loads of friends that were there, so ended spending loads of time there...it's well ace...

hypothetically speaking, if i was to go back to first year and back into halls, i'd pick OP without a doubt. fun fun fun!

If i get in (i'll find out like next week), then i'll be choosing OP without a doubt. All my mates from Manc live there and everytime i've been i've loved it too much.
