    'james decides to save money during the six-week holiday. He saves 1p on the first day,2p on the second, 3p on the third and so on. How much will he have at the end of the holidays(42days)? If he carried on,how long would it be before he has saved pound 100?

    the amounts form an arithmetic progression:

    1, 2, 3, 4, ..., 42

    so a = 1

    d = 1

    n = 42

    use the formula to add up the terms.
