Formerly the 'Iffley Mead School', this recent name change is a bit unfortunate.

    Wow.

EDIT UPDATE: Well, look what I found: https://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/...at-the-lookout

    Awkward.

MEGA UPDATE 19 months on: both links have changed their name to something less terroristy.

"The Isis Academy is a community Special Academy for children and young people up to the age of 18 with complex special educational needs."

The person who named it could have been literally retarded.

Formerly Iffley Mead School, we changed our name when we converted to become an academy in February 2013. We chose the name 'Isis' for our academy because this is the name given to the section of the River Thames as it flows near us, and because of the positive associations of the ancient Egyptian Goddess, Isis. We are very proud of our Outstanding academy, and want to be proud of its name. It is sad that the name's positive connotations have been overwhelmed by negative associations. We have undertaken a consultation with governors, staff and parents and carers and intend, over the coming weeks, to change our name to "The Iffley Academy."

What a shame. I wonder how much it will cost to change their pre-printed stationery, web site, business cards, signage, etc.

    :-(

Already knew it would be to do with the Egyptian Isis. It's a shame they had to change it though and I'm surprised the others in this thread did not realise what Isis actually refers to... another shame.

Well it's not like they teach it in school and it was never in an episode of The Simpsons or Rugrats so everyone's **** out of luck discovering that word and backstory.

That's weird I thought people learnt stuff outside as well - especially with the internet at their disposal. I used to research stuff all the time, Egyptian history is really interesting and fascinating. I also watch a lot of documentaries. Don't kids love that sort of stuff nowadays then?

I'm sure some kids are looking up ISIS, but aren't gonna sit and delve into the history of the word.

Kids and adults mostly watch 'reality' TV and dating shows right?
