So can people please just stop calling it Trident, or the Trident missile system renewal. It has nothing to do with the missiles, it is to do with the building of 4 new submarines to replace the 4 Vanguard Class submarines. So we are basically debating something which doesn't exist. The media and politicians are talking a load of rubbish. Do you not want 4 SSBN's, top end assets which can hit any target on earth, with new technology transfer from the Americans and high end jobs for people in Britain. We must build 4 new submarines. The sooner and quicker we do it, the cheaper it will be.

Actually if you want to be specific, Trident is the payload delivery system which includes the missile, rocket motor and guidence systems.

Renewing trident will mean replacement of all the above components as well as four new SSBN's.

The warheads and subs are ours, the rocket and electronics are from the americans.

The plan is to keep the missiles and update the submarines, but the topic is Trident, because the missiles are useless without a submarine platform.

Four SSBNs is the minimum required to have a continuous at sea deterrent. Fewer than four replacement submarines means a big loss in nuclear political power, so the debate is about the entire deterrent programme, missiles included, even if the terminology is misleading.

I agree we need to build them.

Yes. The Americans do not have control of our nuclear deterrent - that is part of the deal. It is however inconceivable that we would act without first consulting NATO because an attack on the U.K. prompting the use of our nuclear weapons will constitute an attack against NATO. Hence WWIII.

Ignore the SNP and some labour MPs who think that building new schools with the money we will save will stop Mr Putin nuking us. Yes, of course new schools and things would be great but in the unlikely but unfortunately possible event of a Western-Russian stand off, showing Putin a new school won't stop him pressing the button. 4 nuclear submarines with one on continuous patrol hidden somewhere in the ocean would however
