I recently started my first employed job (last week) however I'm finding it very difficult (I've struggled with anxiety all my life). This job is in retail. There are numerous reasons why I want to leave (aside from my anxiety) and I guess I'm just looking for advise (or to talk with people who are going through the same thing).

What is your education level? Office jobs are good because you're alone on the computer most of the time.

    I have AS/A2 levels (Alevels) and 2 NVQ's.
With office jobs I would be worried about answering the phone etc. (this sounds ridiculous however my anxiety affects my verbal communication).

Much better to treat the anxiety instead of trying to skirt around the issue. I used to do it and it was futile, hopeless. I dealt with the anxiety and now things are better.

I totally agree- I went to my GP today and have been told to self refer myself to a therapist. There is however a waiting list (not sure how long haha) therefore I have to put up with it for the time being

    I agree.

OP I've just worked through it - literally. There used to be a time where I couldn't/wouldn't even answer the phone at home - when I was a teen. Now I can take and make phone calls at work and have conversations with anyone. Retail really helped me since it forced me to push beyond my comfort zone. It sounds daft but the more you interact with the public, the more you learn how to predict people and respond to conversations/humor/aggression. I may never come naturally, but you learn how to handle it. It's kind of like the difference between being able to paint - like Picasso or whoever - and being able to paint by numbers, but if you can paint something by numbers that looks exactly like a Picasso, then who is to know? Might sound odd but that's my experience .
