# Simultaneous equations watch

1. I need help solving these simultaneous equations to find x and y. Alpha (a) and beta (B) are constants.

ax + 2ay = B
Bx - ay = 2B

How would you solve something like this?

2x + 2y = 3
3x - y = 6

You can solve your equations in a similar way. If you're stuck, post your ideas and any working.
3. One possible way to approach this would be to take one of the equations and solve for one of the variables then substitute into the other equation. So from the first equation we get x=(B-2ay)/a. Then sub this in for x in the second equation and solve for y in terms of alpha, beta. See how you get on. As notnek suggested it may be useful to consider thinking about solving other simultaneous equations, this is exactly the same try not to let the alpha and beta confuse.
4. As an alternative to poorform's suggestion, it might be better to multiply both equations by and then add/subtract the equations to eliminate one of the variables. I would prefer the substitution method, but I'm just posting this in case elimination if more your style.
5. Thanks, these suggestions really helped!
