A few weeks ago, when Portugal held its national election, left-wing parties as a whole gained the majority of seats in Parliament, but was blocked from forming a government by the country's constitutional President, essentially on the grounds that "the people voted the wrong way", as the Telegraph put it.
Instead, a minority right-wing government was allowed to form and continue with the austerity measures backed by the Eurozone.
Today, however, the anti-austerity coalition of the Left won a vote of no confidence in the minority government.
Anyone who supports democracy should be pleased that this fiasco has hopefully ended.

Guess they took a look at Greece. Still, the people ought to get what they voted for. If they vote for a bad option, they ought to have it inflicted on them.
Incidentally, Sweden's right wing party got shut out by all the left wing parties despite being the most popular. Though to be fair this is a worse situation as it looks like the anti-austerity parties have an accumulative majority in Portugal.

Unfortunately, Greece never got to implement an alternative to austerity, because of the terms imposed on them by the Troika. They should have left the Eurozone, but Syriza was never a Eurosceptic party.

Greece did austerity with knobs on. They were forced to do it by a power that is outside the influence of the Greek people. Greece is in such a mess because they carried out austerity. What do you think the pre-Syrizia government were doing? Now Syrizia are being forced by the EU (so Germany) to do austerity. Yet you will still complain about the lefties. What exactly is it you want?
If there is anything to be learned form Greece it is that if you are a small country a big country has no qualms in needlessly destroying your country.

Yes, they did. Five years of brutal austerity measures resulting in mass unemployment, falling living standards and no economic growth. In line with what textbook macroeconomics predicts. (And, yes, we had stagnating growth in Britain too, from 2010-2012. The independent Office for Budget Responsibility concluded that the Conservatives' austerity measures slowed growth by 2.2% from 2010-2012, but this is very likely to be an underestimate, according to many economists. Osborne then postponed the majority of his austerity measures when he realised what was happening in 2012, in order to get enough growth in time for the election).

This left wing coalition got a majority of 62%!
Comparethat to the "majorities" you have over here that are half that. First past the post is dictatorship lite.
