So, I want to do some kind of English lang at uni whether it be language on its own, linguistics on its own, or language and linguistics on the same course. How do I write my personal statement in order to cater for all these choices?
My first choice is Linguistics at uni of Manchester, and my second is English language and Linguistics at uni of Sheffield. Other choices will probably be linguistics at MMU and English Language at Reading.

At Reading, we're looking for students who can show they are passionate aspects of English Language / Linguistics. If you want to get into a particular university, have a look at what specialisms the department has and - after deciding if this is what you're interested in, a we're all slightly different - write your statement angled towards that.
For example, at Reading we are interested in what people are doing with language and how this is causing it to develop and change, whether we're talking about language and the media, language and gender, English in the world or language learning and literacy. We have a research institute which looks at literacy and multilingualism, so that goes into first and second language acquisition. Are you fascinated by or passionate about finding out more about those areas? Write about that, and what your experience is that leads you to be so.
It's also good to mention careers aspirations and any work experience you have which might be related to your area of study.
I hope this is helpful.
