Ive got an alcoholic friend who after 10 years has agreed to get help for his drink problem. What's the chances it'll actually work?

Honestly, no-one can tell you if it will work or not. Agreeing to get help is a huge step but it depends how much he complies with the people helping him, how good they are, what they do and any number of other things. Keep encouraging and supporting him as much as you can, make sure he knows you're there to help if or where you can and hopefully it'll work out well and the treatment will be successful as possible.
