In my opinion, its good, Comeplay at the union on saturdays and vodka island at tiger tiger on mondays are the best nights. Avoid bounce at walkabout on thursdays, unless being cramped and sweaty is your cup of tea!

Yeah, I find it really good! Our union is fab, there are 4 main nights:
Mon= Fun Factory- free!! Plays indie/ rock/ alternative.
Weds = rubber duck. Pop & cheese. This is when all the AU clubs turn out.
Fri = Access all areas- bit of a random mix, but lots of chart indie type stuff I guess.
Sat= Come Play- Again a mix, but there's usually something for everyone.
Drinks at the union are cheap, and there's always a good atmosphere, its really good!
In town there are several places, Walkabout, Liquid, Tiger Tiger, The Welsh Club, Metros, Barfly, and Creation (soon to be Oceana I understand!). So whatever your taste in music there is something for you.
Plus entry and drinks here seem to definitely be on the cheap side, I rarely spend over £20 on a night out.

Theres plenty of places to go. Oceana is opening soon too. To name a few clubs- Chilli's, Liquid, Risa, Jumpin Jaks, Aqua, Red Rooms, No 10's and Tiger Tiger then you've got bars like Varsity, Lloyds (theres 3 different ones), Fat Cats, Q Bar, Walkabout, Zync, Life, Edwards and loads others! If you like your 80's music theres Flares, Reflex and Lava Lounge too  Everything is close together too

i think its all pretty lame - tacky themed events in the centre. you have to hunt down better stuff around the edges. its no manchester / london, lets be honest. in fact, i'd say its worse than newcastle. its ok if you chain bars doing cheesy themed events like baywatch, 80s, that sort of thing. there isn't really anything "cool" in cardiff that you'll stumble across without doing a lot of searching.
what about the R'n'B hip hop funky house n garage scene? Is there any in cardiff?
La Tropicana is supposedly hiphop/ rnb-ish, or so I've heard. Don't know of any students that go there, though... Tiger Tiger plays that sort of stuff upstairs on a Monday, but it's the more commercial stuff (or so I'd assume- I actually know nothing about it, but most people seem to know the songs, so I'm going to go with that :p:). And Oceana will have an rnb room from what I've read. I can't help any more than that though. Indie music seems to be better catered for (Barfly, Welsh Club, Metros, etc), but then that's possibly just what I've seen because of where the people I know go...

Buffalo sometimes has breakdance battles, hip hop and open mic nights and plays some good funky house once a week. but the dance area is a little small and sometimes the door staff they employ can be a bit tiresome to deal with - e.g. not letting boys in unless they are with women at 20h15 on a Saturday night... 20h15!!!! when inside was deserted. It makes it a bit difficult sometimes to meet up with friends - hopefully they've addressed this as we've spoken to the manager a few times about the absurdity of this.

Chlli's is the place to go for funky house, its a favourite of mine  Liquid also has some house nights every now and again e.g. Joey Negro is there on Sunday. You could also try Red Rooms and Aqua for house/dance.

red rooms and aqua are pretty dive-ish imho.

Cardiff's got an awesome nightlife. Really friendly atmosphere, dirt cheap drinks every night of the week and uncountable different bars, clubs & events covering pretty much any possible taste. Even aside from all the every night stuff since Cardiff's a capital u get every major gig happening on ur doorstep too. Oh yeh an everythings dead close to everything else, so u've never got a huge trek going from one bar / club to another.

Seriously, any night of any week there's always a bangin night to be had somewhere in the city or at the union.

Hardly - you can easily expect to spend around £50-60 if you go into town. Definitely agree about the 'everythings close to everything else'.

Liquid's quite **** imo. Square and Insomnia are good.
Wooooooah how do you spend £50-£60?!?! I rarely spend more than £15 on a night out, including entry, taxis and drink at home!! Admittedly I don't go to places when they're not student nights (and so £2 for double vodka redbulls, etc, etc) but still...

-train ticket
-taxi home (although is split between other people)
-drinks
-entry fee for some clubs (£5 entry)

I find drinks to be quite expensive, which is why I think it's a better idea to drink a lot before you to town.
Generally though when you're a student in Cardiff you don't have to get the train
Also if you're living in Cathays getting a taxi isn't needed unless you're too drunk to stand up straight or your shoes are killing you or it's raining ... and even then it's only like a quid each ...

Anyways moving on ...
I'm pretty sure I got my drink spiked the only time I've been to Aqua ...

My favourite place to go out in Cardiff is definitely Metros.

Aaaah nothing like a piece of toast in Metros.
I can't wait to get back and see what the place smells like now nobody is smoking in there ... might even smell worse *haha*

I grew up in Manchester which is supposedly one of the best club scenes in the country...and as far as I'm concerned Cardiff gives it a run for its money in many ways. I'm into indie/alternative or whatever though so I can't give a fully rounded opinion but there's something on pretty much every night, you can walk everwhere so no taxi fares and drinks are cheap in most places. The atmosphere in the clubs I go to is a lot friendlier than a lot of clubs I frequent in Manchester.

The only down side is that there isn't much atmosphere in the city centre actually outside the clubs...it always seems really dead so you don't get the 'night out' atmosphere until you're actually in the club. Depends what scene you're looking for I suppose but I like it. Metros is genius.
