Can you post the full question?
Unfortunately that is the whole question
My tutor said something about working backwards by expressing arg(X+iy)(a+bi)=c in terms or X and y and then comparing a b and c to the solution, but I didn't understand how to do that

please post a photo of the question.
5. Try (x+ij)(a+bi) = 5x-2

Seperate the real and imaginary parts after expanding and you should get your answer
