I am a EU student currently studying Computing with foundation year. I have a question about student finance available to me. Before coming to University I applied for student finance and my application was approved. I received a letter saying I am eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan and Maintenance Grant and my payments have been scheduled and approved. I already received my first instalment of Maintenance Loan and Grant, however today I tried to login to my student finance account to check my payment schedule and it has changed and now says "As you're an EU student you can't get a maintenance loan to help with your living costs." and what was previously paid as a First Maintenance Loan instalment now says "Interim" instead of "First". I'm not sure what to think of this and I'm very concerned whether this means I will not be able to receive my maintenance loan any more and also with government changes to grants does it mean that next year I will not receive any financial support? I have lived in England for nearly 6 years and worked full time for over 5 years so I should qualify as a resident.

As long as you can prove your residence in the UK, and you didn't come here purely for education, then you should be assessed as a Home student. You should get the Maintenance Loan and be assessed for the Maintenance Grant. I think SF have made a mistake in viewing you as an EU student. You need to go back to them and find out how to submit your residence evidence.

You need to check whether they have been received by the correct department, I think. Sometimes documents get lost in the system. I'd give them a ring.

I called the student finance and explained the situation and they told me that I am still going to receive my maintenance loan and to ignore what it says on the website. I am a bit relieved now but I still don't understand why would the information on my student finance account change for no reason and I'm not really comfortable just ignoring what it says and can't help the feeling that they are not telling me everything and sooner or later will stop my funding.

Do you agree with the proposed ban on plastic straws and cotton buds?
